Workshop/APD celebrates the promotion of J. Tyler Marshall AIA, Michael Luft-Weissberg AIA, and Stephan Thimme AIA to Principal, elevating three leaders whose expertise in architecture and design, technical delivery, and operations underpins much of our work. Together, they have helped to build systems, standards, and operating procedures that guide our multidisciplinary team, while leading award-winning projects. Trusted by colleagues, clients, and peers across the architecture and design community, all three are deeply committed to mentorship, education, and the implementation of cutting-edge tools and techniques that move both projects and our practice forward.
"Tyler, Michael, and Stephan have been pillars of Workshop/APD leadership for decades, and they have each left an indelible mark on our portfolio and our business. From design to project documentation and delivery, to creating a support system and vibrant culture for our team, they've helped to build the foundation we all stand on. Each of them has made a point of raising the bar and raising up those around them – naming them principals recognizes the leadership they provide every day."— Founding Principal Andrew Kotchen
The promotions follow the January 2025 elevation of Andrew Kline, Nicole Ficano, and Jonah Kaplan to principal, when Marshall and Luft-Weissberg were also named associate principals. Thimme was previously a managing director and senior associate.
“When we founded Workshop/APD we hoped to create a practice that would live on long after us. We are so grateful to these leaders – not only for their extraordinary talent and innumerable contributions to the firm, but for their commitment to its bright future as well.”— Founding Principal Matt Berman

About J. Tyler Marshall AIA- One of Workshop/APD’s earliest employees, Tyler Marshall has spent more than two decades realizing some of the firm’s most complex residences, including Central Park apartments, residences at New York’s Printing House, a 1920s waterfront Tudor estate in Greenwich, CT, and the renovation of an 1800s miner’s cottage in Aspen. He brings a holistic understanding of how buildings are conceived, detailed, and assembled, and moves fluidly between historic and modern design. In his time at Workshop/APD, he has built a practice spanning design, project management, technical coordination, and team leadership, and contributed to the firm’s winning entry in Brad Pitt’s 2006 Global Green competition. Today, Tyler balances design and delivery with mentorship, helping his team develop the judgment and confidence to lead. Learn more about Tyler HERE.

Michael leads the firm’s mentorship program, grounded in teaching through doing, and focuses on improving the tools and operational practices behind the team’s work, including sustainable approaches in both projects and office operations.
