As a Principal at Workshop/APD, Stephan Thimme helps shape the systems, standards, and collaborative processes that underpin the firm’s work across architecture, interiors, and planning. For more than two decades, he has played a central role in Workshop/APD’s evolution, helping guide its growth from a small studio to an internationally recognized multidisciplinary practice. Stephan is responsible for the overall quality and consistency of the 100+ person team’s technical output, overseeing initiatives that span documentation, digital modeling, visualization, and emerging technologies, supporting the firm’s increasingly sophisticated and complex projects. He views the architect’s work fundamentally as an act of communication, ensuring that exciting design concepts are translated into clear, cohesive, and reliable information that can be effectively realized by clients, consultants, contractors, and project teams alike.
In his time at Workshop/APD, Stephan has seen hundreds of projects to completion. The expertise from these stories provides him with the clear understanding of the processes that make a successful project. Known for his thoughtful and measured approach, Stephan serves as both a mentor and facilitator within the practice. He is committed to fostering an environment where knowledge is shared openly, standards remain exceptionally high, and individuals are empowered with the tools and resources needed to do their best work. He believes successful projects are built not only throughout design excellence, but through trust, clarity, and a commitment to continuous learning. Throughout his tenure, Stephan has also been instrumental in developing the tools and frameworks that support firm operations. From creating some of Workshop/APD’s earliest project management systems to implementing firmwide support platforms and advancing AI-driven workflows, he has consistently championed innovation in service of stronger collaboration and better project outcomes.
Originally from Germany, Stephan holds a degree in architecture from RWTH Aachen, one of the country’s leading technical schools. He relocated to New York following his studies and early professional experience in Germany, having previously completed internships in NYC that inspired the move. Outside the studio, Stephan enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, continuing the never-ending restoration of their 120-year-old Staten Island home, listening to jazz, and following soccer.
