Principal Michael Luft-Weissberg brings broad architectural knowledge, technical rigor, and a deeply collaborative approach to complex projects at Workshop/APD. Since joining in 2015, he has led work across North America, including ground-up homes, comprehensive renovations, boutique hospitality projects, and coastal projects shaped by evolving climate and regulatory considerations. An expert generalist, Michael is adept at navigating the interdependent decisions required to move projects from concept through construction, transforming complex conditions into clear, executable solutions.
Drawn to tectonic expression, honest materials, craft, and detail that reveal a building’s character, Michael approaches architecture as both a design discipline and a process of continuous resolution and refinement. He believes design continues through construction, when collaboration with skilled craftspeople and trades brings a project fully into focus. Equally attentive to the larger vision and the finely crafted components that support it, he views technical requirements, building science, and code compliance not as constraints, but as opportunities to make a project more intelligent, beautiful, and enduring.
A steady, optimistic leader, Michael builds partnerships around shared goals and mutual respect. A trusted collaborator with clients, architects, designers, consultants, contractors, boards, and agencies alike, he guides teams through challenging entitlement, environmental, historic, and regulatory processes. He values collective effort, and believes the best outcomes emerge when specialized perspectives operate as a cohesive whole. His leadership style is grounded in teaching through doing, helping motivated teams build the judgment and confidence to do their best work. This commitment to learning extends across the practice and profession. In addition to leading Workshop/APD’s mentorship program, he focuses on improving the tools and operational practices that help teams deliver exceptional work, including the integration of sustainable approaches in both projects and office operations. Michael holds a BFA in fine art and design from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a Master of Architecture from the Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture at the City College of New York. He is a Registered Architect in more than 10 states, and an active member of both the AIA and NCARB. A father, pilot, and musician, he lives and continues to learn through the same curiosity, focus, and capacity for complex problem solving that inform his work.
