What does “Crafted Modern” mean at Workshop/APD? We embrace technology and celebrate craft, bringing materiality and contrast to luxurious modern spaces. The word “Modern” underscores an innovative, forward thinking approach. “Craft” is an open-minded exploration of the ways that materials and connections can be elevated by transformation and continue to evolve over time. Finished, refined, textured, honed, engineered, joined and detailed: in revealing the hand of the maker we breathe life into the materials of our trade. Subtle variations created by man, machine, time or weather make each project and space unique. There is beauty in so-called “imperfections”, which imbue a decorative, tactile quality and invite investigation and touch, activating a relationship between a space and its inhabitants. This is what gives modern design a soul.

A sculptural, blackened steel fireplace offers a modern take on the traditional fireplace, becoming the focal point of the living room. Set against the wood-lined ceiling, its dark form creates a strong contrast with the lighter natural materials throughout the space.

In this primary bath, expansive limestone slabs bring natural variation and depth to the room’s clean architectural lines. Custom vanities pair finely detailed oak millwork with substantial stone tops.

A timber pavilion marks the approach to the home, creating a memorable sense of arrival while offering a first glimpse of the landscape beyond.

The cold plunge is wrapped in patterned marble, bringing depth and natural movement to the spa. Framed glass doors and clean metal detailing keep the space feeling modern, allowing the stonework to remain the focus.
In this iconic West Hollywood Penthouse kitchen, warm wood millwork and stone surfaces soften the home’s modern lines. Carefully integrated cabinetry gives the space a tailored, built-in quality, while expansive glazing opens the kitchen to the terrace and views beyond.

A sculptural spiral staircase is wrapped in natural oak and hand-applied plaster, with custom curved benches following its form through the primary closet. The continuous woodwork softens the stair’s geometry and makes the transition between levels feel more intentional.

On the left, a custom wood bench offers a handcrafted, 21st Century interpretation of traditional dining seating, with its tall spindle back bringing warmth and character to the room. On the right, handmade porcelain pendants descend through the ceiling.
