Asked and Answered: Minimal, Gutter-less Architecture

Gutters are frequently treated as a functional necessity, collecting rainwater at the roof edge, moving it through downspouts, and carrying it away from the home. But they can also interrupt a roofline’s clarity, adding visual weight to otherwise precise architectural forms.

In certain Workshop/APD homes, particularly those defined by clean gables and quiet exterior detailing, we like to approach water management differently. Rather than applying a visible system to the roof edge, drainage is integrated into the architecture, landscape, and site design from the beginning. Over decades, we’ve developed and embraced well-proven systems that allow us to create clean, minimal, gutter-less designs without compromising the architecture’s durability, functionality, or aesthetics.

The strategy begins at the roof. Rainwater is allowed to shed naturally from the roof plane, moving over the edge and down to grade. Subtle, minimum overhangs, fascia trim, and concealed flashing help direct that water outward, away from the façade, so the exterior walls remain protected without the need for conventional gutters or downspouts.

At ground level, the landscape becomes part of the system. At the surface, planting beds, mulch, grass, gravel, vegetated swales, and other soft perimeter conditions help absorb impact and reduce splash-back. These elements are not simply decorative; they mediate the transition between roof, wall, and ground while supporting the home’s long-term performance.

Below the surface, drainage continues in layers. A surface-level drain at grade captures runoff where it lands, while a foundation-level drain at the base of the structure relieves hydrostatic pressure  and provides additional protection below grade. Site grading moves water away from the building, and sub-surface drainage carries it safely from the foundation where it can be collected, retained, and allowed to percolate back into groundwater foundation drainage which can include mechanical pumps which serve a separate role where high ground water is present. 

These systems manage groundwater below grade rather than roof runoff, helping prevent water from collecting around or entering the foundation. Rainfall and surface water are addressed through grading, catchment, pervious surfaces, planting beds, and more structured perimeter drainage; groundwater is handled through its own below-grade system.

Coordination is the key to success here. Roof geometry, flashing, façade materials, planting, grading, soil conditions, and foundation drainage all have to be considered together. Exterior materials such as cedar will naturally weather over time, but when the building envelope is properly detailed, the absence of gutters does not mean the absence of protection.

A house without gutters is not a house without drainage. It’s a house where drainage is designed as part of the architecture itself: quiet, integrated, and largely unseen. The result is a cleaner roofline and a more cohesive relationship between building and landscape, with performance built into the composition rather than added onto it.
